if you follow the news you should have known what was going on inside Iran after the election , how the internet was a boost to the protests and how the government decreased bandwidth speed of internet to half .

in this series of blogs I’m going to review how Iran’s internet works after the election and how the election and protests after that affected the online businesses .

Iran doesn’t have a dedicated line of fiber optic bandwidth bringing high speed internet inside the country , the government brings the bandwidth in ,from two ports in north east and south west of the country, one connects to service providers in U.A.E the other is connected to the service providers of turkey .when ever the government want’s to do something to the speed does it from these two ports. after the election speedtest.net reported that iran ranks 185th in the bandwidth speed .

internet users are divided to two Groups by the government , first are individuals which are not allowed to have bandwidth speed of more than 128 KBPS , second are organizations which are allowed to have bandwidth speed of up to 1 MBPS per Phone line . price list of ISP’s in iran could be funny for people of more developed countries as it is 30$ (us) monthly for the 128 kbps with monthly free traffic limit of 12GB and maximum limit of 18GB . if every thing works perfect daily traffic could be 1.28GB means maximum allowed traffic finishes in 14 to 15 days for people who are downloading 24 hours a day(it takes 14 hurse to download a xvid movie) . every extra gigabyte of traffic costs 3$ which every user is allowed to use 6 extra gigabytes. the total could cost up to 50$ (include taxes and the telecommunication monthly charges ) sometimes the maximum allowance of traffic could finish in 15 to 20 days . for the organizations there is traffic limit but there is no speed limit . an isp with fair pricing is going to charge 500$ per month for the speed of 1mbps if more than 1mbps speed is required an other phone line in needed meaning 2mbps=2xphonelines+2×500$ the traffic limits for the 1mbps are 50GB per month.

NOW there are two filtering posts which are controlling the traffic first one is installed by ISPs them selves which government provide it the other is installed by the government . the content of the site requested is going to be checked twice by these two filters which decreases speed the government filter which is more powerful was installed a few days before the election . it is even more sensitive then the one installed to the ISPs , in fact it is capable of working in both ways means its not only controlling what you received but also it control’s what you’ve sent . it is keyword sensitive for example if an abuse to the leader sent to some social networks its going to filter the page right after that abuse in delivered on that site . it automatically filters some preloaded keywords such as: SEX, Period , IRAN ELECTION , OPPOSITION etc the proxy is going to block your access immediately after finding one of these words either in title or content of the requested web page . the proxy activates as soon as you search one of this words on a search engine like Google and blocks your access it works even if you search these word with keyword phrases and qualifiers for example: my oppositions or move out period it even works when these words are parts of the keyword . access to almost every social networks is banned and connecting to them could cost your life .

how people are bypassing the proxy inside ? knowing that words depended to proxy server is filtered inside the country. so any website contain words like bypassing the proxy is filtered or going to be filtered after the first time you have accessed it .

the answere is that there is only one way to bypass the proxy right now and that is a software called ULTRA SURF from a Chinese group called wuje there were two of these software’s the other called FREEGATE which is from the same company after what happened after the election the group wanted western governments to fund them but unfortunately no one accepted and the group stopped FREEGATE and now the only port to the outside world is the ULTRASUFR software which the group warns to spot it every day.

on the other hand as a publisher you can find out which part of your article excited more users and what was so exiting about that and it will help you make more powerful content in fact there are times that you want to make the audience have more attention to a particular part of your article but you don’t want to have that much of emphasize on that particular part and you prefer that the audience find it out themselves , if that part of the article catch eyes of a viewer and it leaves a comment on that particular part you can be shore that more people are going to see that particular part .
